Summary of Role:

SunPower is seeking an experienced attorney and leader to provide legal support for our fast-moving team of product managers, engineers, and marketers. In this role, you will advise on a variety of product development, consumer protection, privacy, regulatory, intellectual property, and information security issues. You will provide practical, actionable advice on evolving legal issues related to products, intellectual property, and data privacy.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

  • As a member of the Legal team, work with colleagues across the Legal team to develop and implement best practices.

  • Work closely with cross-functional teams, including executive management, business leads, product managers, engineers, technical experts, and inventors.

  • Partner with internal clients effectively throughout the product development lifecycle, advising on new products and features, identifying applicable legal constraints and product risks, proposing solutions and mitigation measures that facilitate business objectives.

  • Build scalable, effective policies and procedures that safeguard customer information, in compliance with data privacy and security regulations, such as GDPR, CCPA/CPRA, and other state laws.

  • Work with stakeholders to scope and conduct regular risk assessments and implement measures to mitigate privacy and security threats and integrate best practices into company operations.

  • Provide legal support related to SunPower’s product strategy needs, priorities, and resources.

  • Draft and negotiate a variety of commercial services, data protection, M&A, business development , and licensing and other intellectual property agreements affecting the company’s products and services.

  • Provide legal support for SunPower’s intellectual property strategy needs, priorities, and resources, including patent cost reduction, monetization, and licensing opportunities.

  • Working closely with outside counsel, maintain an active global patent portfolio, including patent prosecution (U.S. and foreign), continuation and divisional filing strategy, patent maintenance including managing patent prosecution docket to meet deadlines.

Required Qualifications:

  • J.D. from an ABA Accredited law school and an active member of the bar in good standing.

  • 10+ years of experience at a leading law-firm (or government agency) and in-house legal department.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 12+ years of experience at a leading law-firm (or government agency) and in-house legal department.

  • Strong foundation in drafting agreements and counseling on product and supply-chain related issues, including consumer protection, privacy, data protection, and technology related transactions and litigation.

  • Background in solar, battery storage, electric vehicle, smart home or semiconductor technology, including equipment, software and devices, tools and processes.

  • Experience and comfort working with senior executives.

  • Ability to handle multiple assignments simultaneously and manage projects to successful completion.

  • Organizational and management skills necessary for the development and implementation of policies, procedures and guidelines.

  • Basic financial reporting capabilities and ability to manage to budget.

  • Preferred location near SunPower offices in Richmond, CA, with remote options available.

Please note the pay range provided is a good faith estimate for this position only and in the geographical location noted. The base pay for this position ranges from $184,800/year to $277,200/year. Pay is based on several factors including market location and may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Dependent on the position offered, other forms of compensation may be provided as part of a total compensation package including annual bonus eligibility, short and long-term incentives, and a comprehensive and competitive benefits program which includes health insurance coverage, employee wellness, life and disability insurance, a retirement savings plan, paid holidays, paid time off, and so much more.
